USGA Amateur Status & Eligibility

Golf Canada, United States Golf Association (USGA)and the Royal & Ancient (R&A) have stipulated that a player maintains amateur status and is allowed to accept prize money as follows: Rule 3a An amateur playing in a scratch competition is allowed to accept any prize, including prize money, up to a limit of £700 or US$1000 in value, per competition, unless the national governing body has set a lower limit. Golf Canada has set the limit for Canadian amateurs at $1,200 CAD per tournament. There is no limit to the amount of money an individual can win during the calendar year, if the amount per event is less than $1,200 CAD. The $1,200 CAD limit also includes any prizes that the player wins because of their performance. The retail value of those prizes will need to be taken into consideration. Ex. JPT winners will receive a $300 CAD PING golf bag, a $50 Red Komodo headcover and $850 CAD in cash. Total $1,200 CAD.

NCAA Amateur Status & Eligibility

The NCAA has a different set of rules. Players are not permitted to receive any form of payout for athletic achievements with the exception of the reimbursement of event associated costs. Rule 12.1.2.4.1 Exception for prize money based on performance – Sports other than tennis In sports other than tennis, an individual may accept prize money based on place finish or performance in an athletics event. Such prize money may not exceed actual and necessary expenses and may be provided only by the sponsor of the event. The calculation of actual and necessary expenses shall not include the expenses or fees of anyone other than the individual. This includes but is not limited to: Tournament entry fees, practice rounds, air fare, hotels, gas, food, etc.

Payout Policies & Procedures

If a particular division has less than five (5) players, the left-over funds will be distributed to the remaining players in the division to a maximum amount of $850 CAD. Any player receiving funds from a JPT sanctioned event that exceeds the event tournament registration fee, will be required to keep receipts for their expenses (gas, hotels, meals, etc.) We ask that players/families do this in case the NCAA asks for proof that the funds received were for tournament expenses when applying to become an NCAA student athlete. Ex. Player A wins a JPT sanctioned event and receives $850 CAD. The event registration fee totals $575 CAD. Player A will be required to keep receipts in order to prove the remaining $275 CAD was for tournament related expenses. Although this is not ideal, we are doing so to preserve players amateur status with the NCAA. As the NCAA amateur status rules and regulations change, evolve and update, we will adjust as needed. Protecting players amateur status is our top priority. Following the event, players who receive funds will be asked to provide the JPT team with their direct deposit information or an E-transfer email in order to pay out the winnings. Funds will be deposited into the designated accounts within 14 days of the conclusion of the event.
